Come prepared, or don't

What to have ready, by situation.

None of this is required to get in touch. It just means the first conversation gets further.

Documents

  • T4, T4A, T5 and any other income slips
  • RRSP contribution receipts
  • Medical, donation and tuition receipts
  • Last year's Notice of Assessment
  • Childcare receipts, if applicable

Good to mention

Any change this year: new job, marriage or separation, a move, a first home, rental income or investment sales. Each one changes what can be claimed.

Missing a slip? Say so. Most can be retrieved.

Documents

  • Record of income: invoices, platform statements, deposits
  • Business expenses, receipts or a spreadsheet
  • Vehicle log and home-office details, if you use either
  • GST/HST number, if you have one
  • Last year's return and Notice of Assessment

Good to mention

How far back the records go and whether anything has been filed already. Behind is normal. It only matters that we know.

A shoebox of receipts counts as a record.

Documents

  • Articles of incorporation and the business number
  • Fiscal year-end date
  • Bank and credit card statements for the year
  • Payroll and GST/HST filings to date
  • Last year's T2 and financial statements, if any

Good to mention

Who the shareholders are, whether anyone is on payroll, and whether the books are in software or a shoebox. Both are fine.

Year-end close and dividend decisions are easier with a few weeks' notice.

Documents

  • The letter itself, all pages
  • The tax year and return it refers to
  • Anything already sent to the CRA in reply
  • The receipts or records the letter asks about

Good to mention

The deadline printed on the letter. Do not reply on your own first. We review what they are asking and prepare the response with you.

Review letters have short windows. Send it the day it arrives.
Working together

Three ways to work with us.

In person

Meet in Toronto.

Bring the paperwork and go through it across a table. Best when there is a lot to untangle or you want to put a face to the name.

Remote

Anywhere in the GTA.

Send documents electronically, meet by phone or video, sign digitally. Most clients work this way most of the time.

Both

Whatever the month needs.

Remote for the routine, in person for year-end or a CRA matter. You do not have to choose once.

What our clients say

Diligent, detail-oriented, and reliable

I have been working with Alex for the past two tax seasons and could not be happier. He not only helped me sort out my past tax issues, he has been diligent, detail-oriented, and reliable with every return since. He even went the extra mile by communicating with the CRA on my behalf.

Trustworthy and Simplified

Alex first filed my taxes in 2019 and ever since he has been an important and integral part of my tax and accounting journey here in Canada. He takes the time to explain the most complex matters in a simplified manner.

ZMZ.M.

Highly Recommended

Very meticulous, organized and neat in his work, which of course was reflected in the positive decision of the CRA examination I came to him with. Without a doubt I will recommend him to all my friends and relatives.

That is common and it is fixable. Tell us how far back it goes and how many accounts are involved, and we will explain what catching up looks like.
