A review is not an accusation

The CRA reviews returns for ordinary reasons. Some are picked at random, some because a figure sits outside the usual range for that income level, and some because a slip filed by an employer or bank does not match what was reported. Most end quietly once the paperwork is produced.

What turns a short review into a long one is the reply. Sending too little means a second request. Sending everything you own invites questions about things nobody asked about. The useful answer addresses exactly what the letter names, with documents attached that support it.

Where we also handle your bookkeeping, the supporting records already exist and are already reconciled, which shortens the whole process. Where returns are outstanding, filing them is often the fastest way to resolve the underlying issue, and that is handled here too.

How we help

From first letter to closed file

Review responses

Processing and matching reviews answered with the specific documents the letter asks for, inside the deadline.

Audit representation

We deal with the auditor directly, so requests come to us and answers go back in a form they can work with.

Outstanding returns

Unfiled years brought up to date, which often resolves the underlying issue faster than arguing the assessment.

Notice of objection

Where an assessment is wrong, an objection is filed within the time limit with the reasoning set out clearly.

Balances and payment

Where tax is genuinely owed, we work out the figure and discuss payment arrangements with the CRA.

Records rebuilt

If the documents behind a claim were never kept properly, we reconstruct what can be supported and say what cannot.

What happens next

Three steps once the letter arrives

01

Send the letter

Before replying to anything. We read what is actually being asked, which is often narrower than it first appears.

02

We gather and reply

Supporting records pulled together and a response written that answers the specific items named, inside the deadline.

03

We follow it through

Further requests handled, the assessment checked when it arrives, and an objection filed if the outcome is wrong.

Who this suits

When people call us

Letter about a specific claim

Medical, donation, childcare, moving or employment expense claims where the CRA wants the receipts behind the number.

Business or HST audit

Expense claims, input tax credits, or revenue figures being examined across one or more years.

Years of unfiled returns

Where the CRA has issued arbitrary assessments because nothing was filed, and the figures do not reflect reality.

FAQ

CRA questions we get asked

What is the difference between a review and an audit?

A review is usually a request for documents supporting one or two items on a filed return, handled by correspondence. An audit is broader, often covers several years, and involves an auditor assigned to the file.

How long do I have to respond?

The letter states a deadline, commonly 30 days from the date on it. If more time is needed the CRA will often grant it, but the request has to be made before the date passes rather than after.

Why was I selected?

Random selection, a figure that sits outside the normal range for your income level, or a mismatch between what you reported and a slip filed by an employer, bank or brokerage.

What happens if I ignore it?

The CRA reassesses using its own figures, which generally means claims are disallowed and a balance is raised. Reversing that afterwards takes longer than answering the original letter.

Can you deal with the CRA directly for me?

Yes, once you authorise us as your representative. Correspondence and calls then come to us rather than to you.

What if I genuinely owe the money?

Then the work becomes confirming the amount is correct and arranging payment. Interest continues on the balance, so settling the figure early costs less than leaving it open.

Send us the letter

Tell us the date on the CRA letter, the tax years involved, and what it is asking for. We will tell you what the reply needs to contain.
